Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeadis chaired yesterday, 4 October 2023, the second meeting of the newly established Transport Council, which has an advisory character and aims to exchange views and recommendations on the management of challenges in the transport sector. The Council includes the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI), the Federation of Employers and Industrialists (FEC), the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (CTEK), the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) and the Association of Transport Engineers.

During the meeting, which was attended by executives of the above organisations as well as relevant officials, issues related to the reduction of the environmental impact of transport for retail trade were discussed. The obligations that our country has for the green transition and the necessity of timely decision making in order to achieve the targets by 2030 were highlighted. Among other things, the issue of carrying out retail deliveries at night, where practicable, was discussed in order to limit the traffic of vehicles carrying out deliveries during the day, especially during peak hours. It was decided that this recommendation should be studied by the KEBE and the OEB in cooperation with their members. The matter would be brought back for discussion at the next meeting of the Transport Council after the views of the KEBE and the OEB had been obtained. The better use of vehicles carrying out deliveries, the renewal of the vehicle fleet, and the establishment of delivery centres to serve small and large traders were raised for consideration.

It was also agreed that achieving the objectives requires dialogue with all parties with a role in retail transport.
