The 18th Annual General Assembly of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA) continued and concluded today in Braga, Portugal, with the participation of MEPs Mr.Mr Andreas Pasiourtidis (leader), Rita Theodorou Superman, Christos Orphanides and Charalambos Theopeptou.

In his intervention during the discussion of the Report of the 1st Standing Committee of the Assembly on current geopolitical developments and security challenges in the Mediterranean region, Mr. He condemned the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel on 7 October 2023 and called for the immediate release of the hostages. He pointed out, however, that Israel's declared war until "total victory" against Hamas cannot be conducted outside the framework of international humanitarian law and called for the immediate release of all Palestinian political prisoners from Israeli jails.

He stressed that an unspeakable humanitarian tragedy is unfolding in Gaza and that Israel's reaction is disproportionate. He deplored the obstruction of the delivery of humanitarian aid and basic necessities to the affected people, in violation of international law, with the result that the Palestinians of Gaza are experiencing conditions that amount to genocide. He stressed that Israel has an obligation to comply with the orders of the International Court of Justice of 26 January 2024, including taking immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of necessary basic services and humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, and with UN Security Council Resolution 2728, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The cycle of blood and violence in Israel and Palestine, he concluded. Pasiourtides, will be broken only by ending the Israeli occupation and settlement in the Palestinian territories and achieving a two-state solution on the basis of the relevant UN resolutions, which provide for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the borders with Israel of 4 June 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, coexisting peacefully with the State of Israel.

Referring to the Cyprus problem, Mr.Pasiourtides reaffirmed our side's commitment to the objective of resuming negotiations, from where they were halted in 2017 in Crans Montana, to achieve a just and viable solution on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. A solution, he stressed, that will reunite the country in conditions of peace and security for the entire Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The Turkish claim for a "two-state" solution, he stressed, is outside the agreed framework of the United Nations and will never be accepted by our side, nor by the international community. He also stressed that the status quo in Cyprus is not sustainable and in no way constitutes a solution to the Cyprus problem.

A member of the Turkish delegation reacted to Mr. Pasiourtidis' statement by making the well-known allegations, which the Cypriot MP refuted, stressing that the Cyprus problem is a problem of invasion and continued illegal occupation. Pasiourtidis noted the efforts made jointly by Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots to reach a viable solution to the Cyprus problem, noting that Turkey's inflammatory rhetoric exposes it as a violator of international law and the main culprit for the non-solution of the Cyprus problem.
