On 31 August 2023 at 11:20, the Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (RSRC) received a report of a missing person, a crew member of the Liberian-flagged merchant vessel "CONTSHIP OAK", which was sailing in a sea area at the northwestern end of the Search and Rescue Area of Responsibility of the Republic of Cyprus (FIR Nicosia).

The CSTED immediately activated the National Search and Rescue Plan "NEARCHOS" and, applying all the procedures laid down in the relevant international search and rescue manuals and regulations, mobilised both the vessel involved "CONTSHIP OAK" and other vessels alongside, in order to conduct searches to locate the missing person.

After 72 hours from the receipt of the first information and after an area of 3600 NM² was searched by a total of 31 coastal vessels, on Sunday, 3 September 2023, the operation was completed without having located anything related to the missing person.

Both the owner of the merchant ship "CONTSHIP OAK" and the State of registry were informed of the incident.
