The Search and Rescue (SAR) Exercise "TEYKROS 01/2022", which took place in an area near Larnaca International Airport and involved an air accident in a salt marsh, for which the activation of the Special National Plan "TEYKROS" was required.
The scenario specifically involved a civilian passenger aircraft, which during the landing procedure at Larnaca Airport, experienced a failure of the landing system hydraulics, resulting in the pilot performing an emergency landing and the aircraft skidding off the runway, ending up in the salt marsh outside the airport.
To deal with the incident, the Larnaca Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (RSRC) activated all the services involved in accordance with the provisions of the Special National Plan "TEYKROS". In detail, forces of the Police, the Fire Service and in particular the Larnaca Airport Fire Station and the Fire Brigade, the General Staff with search teams of the Submarine Disaster Unit of the Naval Command and the Special Operations Company of the Commando Command participated in this exercise, means and personnel of the Larnaca Airport management company Hermes Airports, the Civil Aviation Services of Larnaca Airport, search teams of the Larnaca PEDPA and the Forestry Department, personnel of the Larnaca Airport Rescue Team, as well as the Larnaca Airport Coastal Surveillance System and unmanned aircraft operation team.
The main purpose of the exercise was to train the personnel involved and familiarise them with the special environment of the salt marshes, as well as to test the specialised equipment for responding to incidents within them.
The operational control and coordination of the means that took part in the exercise was carried out by the Larnaca CPSD, while the preparation and planning of the exercise was carried out in cooperation with all the governmental and private bodies involved.
