Methodological Information

Purpose and Coverage

The purpose of the Road Freight Transport Survey is to collect statistics on the transport of goods by road within Cyprus or to and from Cyprus by motorised road transport, registered with the Road Transport Department.

For domestic transport, a sample is selected from the list of registered lorries. Road transport of freight carried by vehicles with a payload of more than 3 tonnes is covered. The sample is divided into 9 categories, depending on the payload of the vehicle and the type of transport (public or private) and covers each of the 52 weeks of the year.

International transport covers all road freight transport to and from Cyprus during the year.

The data compiled are sent to Eurostat in accordance with Regulation (EU) No 70/2012 on statistical returns in respect of the carriage of goods by road.

Data collection

The unit of measurement is the motor vehicle for the carriage of goods by road. For each vehicle, data are collected on its characteristics, route and goods.

For domestic transport, data are collected throughout the year by telephone interviews with registrars, whereas for international transport, data are collected directly from the companies to which the vehicles belong.

Definitions

The tonne-kilometre (tkm) is a unit of measurement for freight transport representing the transport of one tonne of goods by a given mode of transport over a distance of one kilometre.

The Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to the fourth quarter of 2022. For the first quarter of 2023 and thereafter, the update is done only in the CYSTAT-DB Database.
