[PIO] Risks from the use of LASER devices

In light of the recent incident involving the serious injury of a minor child's eye by an inappropriate laser pointer, the Consumer Protection Service (CPC) calls on consumers, and especially parents, to be particularly aware and careful with similar products, as such devices are not classified as toys and should under no circumstances fall into the hands of children, as they pose serious risks. In particular, they may cause permanent and serious damage to vision or temporary damage to the skin, and even fires.

It should be noted that the YPC regularly carries out market checks and takes action if dangerous laser devices are identified. However, it has been established that many purchases are made via the internet, from online shops outside Cyprus and are therefore difficult to detect. Consumers are therefore urged to be particularly careful, to avoid the purchase and use of dangerous laser devices, to use authorised laser devices with caution and, finally, to ensure that they do not end up in the hands of young children.

For further information or to file a complaint, consumers can contact the Service through its website or by calling 22200928, 22200926 and the Consumer Hotline at 1429.
