Social media use and mobile apps
By 2023, nearly 8 in 10 businesses (79.9%) with 10 or more employees will be using social media. Businesses using social media are considered to be those that have a user profile, account or user license depending on the requirements and type of social media.
Specifically, 79.7% of all businesses with 10 or more employees use social media (e.g. Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.). 38.5% use multimedia content sharing sites or applications (e.g. YouTube, Instagram, etc.) and 22.7% use blogs or microblogs (e.g. Twitter, etc.). 8.5% of businesses have a mobile app for customers (e.g. loyalty or loyalty program, customer support, etc.) (Figure 1)
Internet data transfer speed
96.4% of businesses have an internet connection. High-speed Internet connections (100 Mbps or more) have increased significantly in recent years. In 2023, 72.1% of businesses have internet connections with internet connection speeds higher than 100Mbit/s compared to 17.1% in 2019. (Table 1)
In 2023, the most popular data transfer speed in Cyprus was between 100 and 500 Mbit/s (41.6% of all businesses). Businesses with a maximum data transfer speed of at least 30 Mbit/s but less than 100 Mbit/s were the second most popular with 19.3%. Businesses with a maximum data transfer speed of at least 1 Gbit/s and at least 500 Mbit/s but less than 1 Gbit/s followed with 16.1% and 14.5% respectively. The least popular speeds were less than 30 Mbit/s with 4.9%. By maximum data transfer speed we mean the data transfer speed based on the contract with the Internet Service Provider. (Figure 2)
E-commerce (E-Commerce)
In 2022, 23.5% of businesses received orders via computer networks (excluding typed e-mails). 22.4% of businesses received orders via websites or applications and 3.6% via "EDI" (Electronic Data Interchange) messages. 18.2% of enterprises received orders for products or services through their own websites or applications, while 11.9% received orders through e-marketplace websites or applications used by various enterprises to market products. 20.8% of enterprises received orders for goods or services through websites or apps from private consumers compared to 13.2% of enterprises that received orders from other enterprises and/or public authorities. (Chart 3)
Business Software Use and Data Analysis (DataAnalytics)
The most popular business software used by enterprises in Cyprus is ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). ERP is a software used to manage the resources (information) of the business between internal departments or functions (e.g. accounting, production, sales, marketing, etc.). By 2023, 41.6% of businesses in Cyprus use ERP software. (Figure 4)
The second most popular software is CRM (Customer Relationship Management). CRM is software for managing information about customers. It facilitates communication with the customer and helps to monitor their buying habits. The customer is at the heart of the business activity. 29.5% of all businesses in Cyprus use CRM software. (Figure 4)
Next is BI (Business Intelligence). BI is software for accessing and analyzing business information. It is software for accessing and analyzing data from internal IT systems and external sources. It provides detailed presentation of findings in reports, summaries, tables, charts and maps to give users detailed information to make better decisions and better strategic planning. 20.8% of all businesses use BI software. (Figure 4)
26.6% of businesses said their employees do data analysis from any data source - internal bars (internal business information systems, sensors, smart meters, websites or social media) or external sources (from other businesses, government agencies or publicly available data from websites or social media). 13.6% of businesses choose to outsource data analysis (another business or organisation). (Table 2)
Businesses day-to-day are asked to deal with huge streams of complex data that are often updated in real time. The use of any kind of business software enables businesses to take advantage of all available information (data) and use it in order to gain a competitive advantage.
Use of Cloud Services (CloudComputing)
Cloud computing refers to ICT services used on the Internet to access software, computing power, storage capacity, etc. Such services can be provided by service providers' servers, can be easily upgraded or downgraded, and can be used "on-demand" by the user, at least after initial deployment (without the need for human communication with the service provider). A prerequisite is that these services must be paid for, either on a per-user or per-capacity-used basis or prepaid.
In 2023, 52.9% of enterprises purchased cloud computing services. The top categories of cloud computing services in enterprises are email (e.g., Email Enterprise, Microsoft Exchange Online/Office 365, etc.) (47.4%) and office software (e.g., word processors, spreadsheets (e.g., Microsoft Office Cloud), etc.) at 40.3%. The use of security software applications (e.g. antivirus, network access control) follows with 39.7% and file storage with 36.2%. (Table 3)
