On the margins of the 4th United Nations Police Chiefs' Meeting, United Nations (UN) Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and UN Police Adviser Faisal Shakhar held a press conference and answered questions from journalists at UN Headquarters yesterday afternoon.

Asked by the Cypriot correspondent whether Mr. Lacroix is optimistic about the Cyprus problem after the cancellation of the trip of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary General Ms. María Ángela Holguín to Cyprus, he said:

"What is important is that discussions are continuing and Ms. Holguín will meet with the leaders of both sides. I think the way they are probably going on is important for the fact that these discussions are ongoing. So, we continue to support the efforts because UNFICYP (United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) is working closely [WITH MS. HOLGUÍN] and the mandates are different. We are largely dealing with the same issue and we hope that these talks will lead to progress towards a political dialogue. We are aware of the challenges, but we remain confident and optimistic."
