During yesterday's (23.02.22) regular briefing of the international media of the United Nations International Organization, by the Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Stéphane Dujarric, ikypros correspondent in New York, Nikos Antoniadis, referred to the statements of the Secretary-General who described Russian President Putin's decision to recognize certain regions of Ukraine as independent as a "violation of Ukraine's territorial integrity and sovereignty". He asked the Representative why the Secretary-General had never issued a similar statement on Turkey's violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Cyprus.
In his reply, Mr. Dujarric referred Mr. Antoniades to investigate the matter so that he would be able to see what the Secretary-General had said at the time, in the early 1970s, about what was happening in Cyprus. "Currently, the situation in the Cyprus problem is one in which the Secretary-General, I think, has put a lot of effort, a lot of political capital into helping the parties resolve their problem on the ground. And either through his Good Offices or through the peacekeeping mission and we continue to work in that way."
Finally, Mr. Antoniades noted that he will not stop the investigation but reminded the representative that he has been a refugee since 1974 and beyond the investigation, he does not forget.
