During yesterday's (18.1.22) regular briefing of the international media of the United Nations International Organization, the Representative of the Secretary-General Mr. Stéphane Dujarric was invited by ikypros correspondent Mr. Nikos Antoniadis to answer questions on the Cyprus problem and the reports of the Secretary-General.

Referring to the Security Council President's statement following his consultations on UNFICYP on 17 January that "the members of the Security Council have called for respect and compliance with all relevant Security Council resolutions and decisions", Antoniades asked the Representative what actions the Secretary-General has taken to prevent Turkey from violating these resolutions and decisions on a daily basis. He added that in none of his reports he never uses the word "invasion", "occupation", "Turkish violations" while keeping equal distance between the aggressor, which is Turkey, and the victim, Cyprus.

In response, Mr. Dujarric stated that the Secretary-General always writes his reports in a way that reflects the reality as we see it, noting that he does not intend to do a kind of meta-analysis of his reports. All reports speak for themselves, he said, but are often criticized by some of the parties involved. He stressed that the UN has always been clear that it is imperative for both sides in Cyprus to respect and comply with the UN, and with all relevant Security Council resolutions.

Asked how the two communities can come together if Turkish invading troops remain, Dujarric noted that the Cyprus issue is one that the UN has been dealing with for a long time.

He also argued that the three Secretaries General he has worked with had been directly involved with the Cyprus issue, and sometimes more so than with other issues. He concluded by noting that the UN was trying to bring the parties closer together to reach an agreement for the benefit of all parties involved, and that the Secretary-General was not the only one involved in this issue.
