[PIO] Report on Cyprus during the regular briefing of the UN international media

During the regular briefing of the international media of the United Nations International Organization, dated 28 August 2023, the Representative of the Secretary-General, Mr. Stéphane Dujarric, referring to the activities in Cyprus of the Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas in the Department of Political and Peacekeeping Affairs, Mr. Miroslav Jenča, noted that he was on the island from 27 to 29 August, as part of the UN's continued engagement with the parties to explore common ground on the way forward on the Cyprus problem.

He added that Mr. Jenča had separate meetings with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides and Mr. Ersin Tatar, respectively, as well as with their representatives. He discussed recent developments on the ground and operational issues related to the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

He added that he visited the fourth sector of the peacekeeping mission and met with peacekeepers where he expressed his appreciation for their professionalism and dedicated service. Mr. Miroslav Jenča also visited the Missing Persons' Committee and will travel to Ankara for meetings with the authorities there from 30 August to 1 September.

Asked by the Associated Press correspondent whether there has been any progress on the disputed road in the buffer zone following the actions of the Turkish Cypriots and whether the Secretary-General plans to meet again with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, Mr. Dujarric replied that he would keep journalists informed of any meetings that may take place on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
