Plenary session 8 February 2024

Colleagues,

2017 is the 9th of February, the day of the death of our great poet Dionysios Solomos, was established by the Hellenic Parliament as World Greek Language Day.

So tomorrow we honour our language, whose roots go back to the depths of the centuries and yet it remains unified, rich and always alive. Greek gave birth to and nurtured Greek civilisation and, by extension, modern Western civilisation. It was in Greece that the most important works of ancient civilization, the works of lyric poetry, the Homeric epics, the ancient drama, were created and ultimately bequeathed to all mankind. Some of the most important philosophical and political ideas have been formulated in Greek, and through it, universal and timeless values have been spread to the ends of the world.

It is therefore our duty to be worthy of the heavy and precious heritage given to us, the Greek language, always preserving in our souls the words of Solomos: "Do I have anything else in my mind but freedom and language?"

Ladies and gentlemen,

February 14 has been established internationally as World Congenital Heart Disease Day. According to the World Health Organization, approximately nine out of every thousand children worldwide are born with a heart condition. Today, thanks to major advances in medical science and the technological development of imaging tests, patients with congenital heart disease enjoy improved and specialised medical services that help to ensure a better quality of life and allow them to face the future with optimism.

As the House of Representatives, we express our support for all patients with heart disease and their families and pledge to continue our long-standing effort to support heart patients by continuously strengthening the relevant legislative framework.

On the occasion of World Congenital Heart Disease Day, the Parliament building will be illuminated in red on Wednesday 14 February.
