[PIO] Report of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs. Anita Demetriou on the death of former MP Petros Stylianou

Ladies and gentlemen,

On a point of order I would like to mention the death of the former Deputy Minister of Interior, former MP and former mayor Peter Stylianou, who passed away on April 25 at the age of 91.

Peter Stylianou was born in Kythrea on 8 June 1933. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Athens, but abandoned his studies to participate in the liberation struggle of 1955-59, during which he developed a rich activity. In 1972 he completed his studies, obtaining a degree in Greek Philology.

He was a member of parliament for the Nicosia constituency with the Patriotic Front from 1960 to 1962, as an independent from 1962 to 1969, then with EDEK from 1969 to 1970, and with the Democratic Party from 1985 to 1991. He was Secretary of the House of Representatives from 1960 to 1962.

During his parliamentary tenure he was a member of the Committee on Labour Problems, the Committee on Education, the Committee on Interior and Defence, the Committee on Finance, the Committee on Labour and Social Insurance, the Committee on Budget, the Committee on Refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, and the Ad Hoc Committee on Green Line Issues.

He served as Deputy Minister of Interior during the 1980-1982 presidency of Spyros Kyprianou, and was elected Mayor of Egomi in 1991, an office he held until 1996.

The deceased had developed a rich trade union activity and served as General Secretary of the FCC from 1961 to 1962, while he was one of the founding members of the IOC, of which he served as General Secretary from 1962 to 1973.
