Plenary session 23 November 2023

Ladies and gentlemen,

The UN General Assembly, by resolution of 17 December 1999, proclaimed 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, wishing to highlight this crime. Unfortunately, nowadays, the various forms of violence against women and young girls, domestic violence, femicide, trafficking, sexual abuse and the denial of basic rights are still dark spots in our progress as a human species. Gender-based violence is linked to wider issues of patriarchy, power and control of women in our male-dominated societies and is directed against women regardless of their origin, age, education and economic status.

In Cyprus, complaints by women victims of violence are constantly increasing, with the actual numbers being even higher, as not all cases are reported or do not all come to justice. At the same time, Europe-wide surveys show that one in three women have been victims of physical or sexual violence. Globally, gender-based violence and the violation of women's basic human rights are on the rise with the rise of extreme regimes and the increase in armed conflicts.

As the House of Representatives we condemn all forms of violence against women and among other things we have proceeded to ratify the "Istanbul Convention" and to introduce the perpetual offence of femicide, which carries the penalty of life imprisonment. However, there is still a long way to go and we declare our determination to continuously modernise the legislative framework relating to crimes of this kind. Our goal is to eliminate gender-based violence from our society.
