Dear colleagues,

December 1 has been designated as World AIDS Day by the World Health Organization. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, an infectious disease caused by HIV, is transmitted only through blood, unprotected sexual intercourse, sharing a syringe or from an HIV-positive mother to a newborn. Today, thanks to advances in medical science, with early diagnosis and initiation of treatment, the disease has become a chronic disease and HIV-positive people are now approaching the life expectancy of the general population, are able to be active members of society, raise a family, work and have a good quality of life. Therefore, information and awareness of the virus and HIV carriers is essential for the acceptance of HIV-positive people by society as a whole without discrimination and prejudice.

As Parliament we support every effort made by the medical community to find a preventive vaccine and a definitive cure for the disease and at the same time we support our HIV-positive citizens and their families in every challenge they face.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The acceptance of all forms of disability is, one might say, self-evident, yet prejudices and stereotypes perpetuate the discrimination suffered by this vulnerable group of our fellow citizens. Thirty years after the decision of the United Nations General Assembly to establish 3 December as World Day of Persons with Disabilities, 15% of the world's population continues to face problems of accessibility and acceptance.

For all of us, solving the accessibility issues faced by people with disabilities and ensuring equal opportunities in all aspects of social life and economic activities is a priority. That is why as a legislative body we have been involved in improving the legislative framework and monitoring accessibility policies, but we have also developed parliamentary actions to develop relevant partnerships with relevant bodies. Our view is that only when all citizens can have the same opportunities and equal rights, only then will we have achieved a truly just society.

Dear Colleagues,

December 5 has been established in 1985, by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, as International Volunteer Day, with the aim of recognizing the valuable social contribution of volunteering and developing further initiatives and actions worldwide.

The Pancyprian Coordinating Council for Volunteerism has been organizing every year, for thirty years, the Volunteer Week, which takes place in the first week of December. The activities organized contribute significantly to informing and raising public awareness, while at the same time supporting the remarkable voluntary work carried out by organizations and organized groups.

In the difficult economic and social conditions we are experiencing, as a result of the recurring crises and increasing war conflicts, especially in our region, volunteering is a supreme vocation, but also an obligation for all of us.
