Plenary session 25 April 2024

Ladies and gentlemen,

Dear colleagues,

Before the agenda, I would like to refer to the anniversary of Labour Day, which we will commemorate next Wednesday. This day was established as a world celebration of the people of wage labour on 20 July 1889, in commemoration of the bloody uprising of workers in Chicago on 1 May 1886, who demanded eight hours and better working conditions.

We honor the workers in our country and around the world who fought against inequality and human exploitation and won rights that ensure dignity and well-being not only at work but also in everyday life.

This year's May Day, with the rise of inequalities, poverty and unemployment, as well as demographic pressures as a consequence of our unstable geopolitical environment, is a commitment for the House of Representatives to find sustainable and innovative policies aimed at safeguarding the social rights of our people by ensuring better working and living conditions throughout the territory of the Republic.
