Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met yesterday (5.6.24) afternoon with the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, at the UN headquarters.
Mr. After the meeting, which lasted 45 minutes, Mr. Gerapetritris made a statement to journalists with the following reference to the Cyprus issue. We reiterated our basic position that the two sides should sit down at the dialogue table, talk frankly and discuss, so that mutual trust can be built within the framework of the decisions taken in the UN Security Council, so that the situation that we all want and which is a long-standing requirement of international law and the United Nations can be achieved in Cyprus.
We expect that in the near future, at the initiative of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, there will be further discussions so that we can start the dialogue. The Secretary-General and I agreed that this is an important moment, this is an opportunity, which we must not let go, and in this direction Greece will stand by the Republic of Cyprus, so that we can take important steps towards resolving the chronic problem of the Cyprus problem."
