The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, in view of the start of the hunting season (fassa hunt) next Sunday, August 20, 2023, appeals to hunters to be particularly careful during their excursions in rural and forest areas, completely avoiding actions and activities likely to cause a fire, i.e. completely avoiding lighting a fire for any reason, as well as throwing lit cigarette butts and matches, since the prevailing weather conditions are particularly favourable for the outbreak and extension of fires.

It is also stressed that the discharge of empty cartridges into the environment constitutes serious pollution and that this is also prohibited by the "Law on the Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game". Therefore, hunters are requested to collect empty cartridges.

It is recalled that lighting fires in forest and rural areas is strictly prohibited and that this action constitutes an offence, which according to the Forestry Law is punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000.00 or both penalties together. Lighting a fire is only allowed in the specially designed grills in the excursion areas of the Forestry Department for the preparation of food.

It is emphasized that the consequences of fires are incalculable, such as the recent disastrous fire in the Limassol semi-mountainous area and elsewhere.

Finally, anyone who notices smoke or fire, in or near the forests, is asked to immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Service).
