The Department of Electromechanical Services of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works has ordered eight (8) minibuses to meet the needs of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth.
The buses have ergonomic passenger seats and are capable of carrying passengers in seats and Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in wheelchairs to facilitate accessibility and transportation of such persons. The buses are equipped with a lifting platform for boarding and alighting disabled persons in wheelchairs. Specifically, these are:
- three (3) minibuses, eight (8) passenger seats, with the possibility of fitting up to four (4) wheelchairs,
- four (4) minibuses, 14 passenger seats, with the possibility of fitting up to four (4) wheelchairs,
- one (1) minibus, nine (9) passenger seats and four (4) wheelchairs.
The purchase was made by the Department of Electromechanical Services after an open bidding process. The total purchase cost amounted to €728,357.35, which will be covered by the budget of the Ministry of Finance. The first three buses will be delivered to the beneficiaries on 28 May 2024 at a special ceremony, while the remaining buses will be delivered in stages until the end of October 2024.
This action is part of the planning for the purchase of vehicles to meet the transport needs of the various Ministries/Departments and Services of the public sector, contributing to facilitate the movement and transport of persons with disabilities.
