The Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that, from 31 January 2022 and for a period of 30 days, a draft of the Municipal Waste Management Strategy 2021 - 2027 is open for public consultation.

In order to achieve the objectives adopted in the context of the transition to the circular economy, the Department of Environment, in cooperation with the European Network IMPEL and with the technical assistance of the European Commission's Structural Reform Support Service, has prepared the new Municipal Waste Management Strategy 2021-2027, with the main purpose of defining the framework of actions and measures to be implemented in the next six years in the field of municipal waste management. The following principles have been taken into account in the formulation of the new Strategy:

  1. Compliance with the obligations arising from the European directives on waste management and achievement of reuse, recycling and landfill reduction targets
  2. Full use of existing waste management infrastructure
  3. Implementation of the waste management hierarchy
  4. Adoption of best and economically sustainable practices

Specifically, the Strategy includes an inventory of the sources and types of municipal waste, the obligations and objectives arising from the European Waste Directives, the current situation regarding waste management in Cyprus, including the existing waste management infrastructure and projections regarding waste generation and management, and sets out the measures and actions for the next six years.

The measures of the Strategy are based on the need to accelerate the fulfilment of the obligations under the Directives and to fully utilise and strengthen the existing waste management infrastructure in order to ensure sufficient capacity for the appropriate treatment of mixed waste. It also takes into account planned developments for new services and infrastructure for source separation and separate collection, which will reduce the generation of mixed waste.

The new measures, building on the implementation of separate collection of municipal waste and the forthcoming implementation of the Pay As I Go schemes in all local authorities, focus on the need to increase separate collection, preparation for re-use and recycling, as well as the need to strengthen infrastructure for the management of mixed waste. Comments on the draft can be submitted to the Environment Department until 1.3.2022, by post to the Environment Department, 1498 Nicosia or online at ndikigoropoulou@environment.moa.gov.cy .
