The Department of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and the Cyprus National Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) announce that in the framework of the celebrations for the International Museum Day 2024 (18 May), which this year has as its theme: "Museums for Education and Research" and the European Museum Night, a number of events are planned, most of them with free admission.
The International Council of Museums (ICOM), in its effort to highlight the role of museums in modern society, established 18 May as International Museum Day in 1977. This day highlights the role of museums as agents of cultural exchange, with the aim of enhancing education, promoting mutual understanding, peace and cooperation between peoples.
The theme of the International Museum Day 2024 celebrations, "Museums for Education and Research", highlights museums as dynamic agents of culture and education, with the potential to nurture and develop curiosity, creativity and critical thinking, providing the public with a comprehensive knowledge experience. This year's celebration of International Museum Day also promotes the concept of a peaceful, empathetic, sustainable and inclusive world.
International Museum Day events are organised annually around 18 May and last from one day to a month. Globally, museum participation is growing every year with more than 37,000 museums taking part in the 2023 celebrations. In Cyprus, this year's programme includes events at 27 different museums and other cultural venues, most with free admission.
The public can visit the website of the Department of Antiquities for all events planned, as well as the websites of the other museums participating in the celebrations. The events will also be promoted on the museums' social media.
