The Parliamentary Defence Committee met today, Thursday, 10 February 2022, and discussed the following issues:

1. The need to upgrade the salaries of noncommissioned officers who have been attending military schools for three years.

(Self-examination at the suggestion of the Parliamentary Defence Committee and MP Christos Orphanides) No. Doc.: 23.04.038.609-2021)

The Committee, in the presence of the Director General and officials of the Ministry of Defence, the Chief of the National Guard and officials of the General Staff of the National Guard (GNEF), as well as a representative of the Ministry of Finance, began the discussion of the above-mentioned issue, in the context of which it examined the question that arose regarding the permanent non-commissioned officers with a three-year course of study who are graduates of higher military institutions. In particular, the need to eliminate the inequality observed against these non-commissioned officers and to upgrade the salary scale for their admission to the Army of the Republic or the National Guard, in order to bring it into line with their upgraded level of studies and to harmonise it with the corresponding status in force in other parts of the civil service and the wider public sector.

In this regard, the members of the Committee submitted specific suggestions and concerns to assist in finding a solution, so that both the request is satisfied and the proper functioning of the Army of the Republic and the National Guard is not disturbed.

On this issue, which will continue to occupy the Committee, the Ministries of Defence and Finance, as well as the General Staff, were given time to consult and come back soon to take relevant decisions.

2.The Army of the Republic (Military Medals) Regulations of 2021.

(No. Fak.: 23.03.058.092-2021)

3. The National Guard (Military Medals) Regulations of 2021.

(Fak.: 23.03.058.093-2021)

The Commission completed the article-by-article study of the above-mentioned regulations, which are intended to regulate the award of military medals to members of the Army of the Republic and the National Guard, in the presence of the Director General of the Ministry of Defence, the Chief of the National Guard and officials of the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff.

In the course of the discussion, the Committee members requested additional information and explanations on individual provisions of the regulations and decided to refer the regulations to the full body.
