The Parliamentary Committee on Labour, Welfare and Social Insurance met today, Tuesday, 1 March 2022, and discussed the following issues:
1. Preparatory meeting of the Social Welfare Committee of the House of Elders.
(Fak. No. 11.15.001)
The Committee participated in a meeting held by the Social Welfare Committee of the House of Elders as part of its preparatory work for the 23rd Session of the House of Elders on the topic "Old Age in the Face of the Coronavirus Spectrum". During the debate, the Social Welfare Committee of the House of Elders presented its annual report, through which, among other things, the requests of the House of Elders are submitted to the relevant bodies with a view to ensuring dignified ageing. Subsequently, they exchanged views on the actions and measures to be taken to improve the quality of life and everyday life of the elderly. The Committee decided to monitor at regular intervals the progress made in promoting the relevant requests submitted by the Social Welfare Committee of the House of Elders.
2. The employment status of delivery in the catering and digital product delivery platforms.
(Ex-officio examination following a recommendation by Mr. Andreas Kaukalias, Christos Christofias, George Koukoumas, Panikos Leonidou and Christos Seneki)
(File No. 23.04.039.015-2022)
The Commission began its discussion of the above-mentioned matter under the ex officio procedure, in the course of which it was informed of the existing framework governing the employment of distributors in the catering and digital product distribution platforms. In particular, the Committee was concerned about the problems faced by these workers, the risks to which they are exposed in relation to their health and safety, the controls carried out by the Labour Inspectorate within the framework of its responsibilities, and the need to further regulate the conditions of employment of the workers in question within an effective framework for safeguarding their labour rights. The discussion will continue at the next meeting of the Commission, to be held in May.
3. The Paternity Protection (Amendment) Law of 2021
(Proposal for a law by Mr Andreas Kaukalias, Christos Christofias and George Koukoumas on behalf of the AKEL-Left-New Powers parliamentary group)
(File No. 23.02.062.163-2021)
4. The Social Insurance (Amendment) (No. 4) Law of 2021.
(Proposal for a law by Mr Andreas Kaukalias, Christos Christofias and George Koukoumas on behalf of the AKEL-Left-New Powers parliamentary group)
(File No. 23.02.062.164-2021)
The Committee took a position, behind closed doors, on the provisions of the above-mentioned legislative proposals, the purpose of which is to amend the existing legislative framework in order to extend the period of time during which the right to paternity leave and paternity allowance may be exercised. The Commission has decided to refer them to the plenary session of the House, after the consultation stage on amendments that may be tabled by Members of Parliament.
