The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights and Equal Opportunities for Men and Women met today, Monday, 21st February 2022, and discussed the following issues:

1. The Prevention and Combating of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and Related Matters (Amendment) Act, 2022.

(Bill proposed by Ms. Anita Demetriou, Speaker of the House of Representatives)

(File No. 23.02.063.008-2022)

The Committee, in the presence of representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order and the Legal Service of the Republic, conducted the provisions of the above proposal for a law, which was submitted to the plenary session of the House on January 20, 2022.

As stated by the Speaker of the House, the author of the said bill, the purpose of the proposed amendment is to replace from the definition of the term "woman" the word "person" - currently provided for in the basic legislation - with the word "girl", so that the relevant definition is consistent with the corresponding definition contained in the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Ratification) Law, by which the Republic of Cyprus has ratified the Istanbul Convention.

The Committee, having heard the views of those concerned, decided to continue the discussion of the matter at its next meeting.

2. The rates of participation of women in the structure of the State in relation to the ranks of the hierarchy.

(Ex officio examination on the recommendation of Ms Irini Charalambidou, Ms Rita Theodorou Superman and Ms Alexandra Attalidou)

(Doc. No. 23.04.038.1100-2021)

The Commission, in the presence of stakeholders, continued the discussion of the above-mentioned issue, which was registered under the ex officio procedure, focusing its attention on the issue of the participation of women in the highest ranks of the security forces.

3. The Setting of Minimum Standards relating to the Rights, Support and Protection of Victims of Crime (Amendment) Act, 2021.

(Proposed Act of Ms. Irini Charalambidou on behalf of the parliamentary group AKEL-Left-New Powers)

(File No. 23.02.062.170-2021)

The Committee decided to forward the above draft law, in relation to which no amendments were submitted, to the plenary session of the House.
