[PIO] Press Release of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism

The Parliamentary Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism met today, Tuesday, 8 March 2022, and discussed the following issues:

1.The general and specific problems in each industrial and manufacturing area in Cyprus and ways of dealing with them.

In the context of its consideration of the above matter, the Committee addressed its previous request to the Executive for the inclusion of funds for the expansion of the industrial areas of Xylotympos, Kition and Dasaki Achna in the supplementary state budget for the year 2022. The representatives of the Ministry of Finance stated that, in case of submission of a supplementary budget, they will make an assessment of the state's fiscal data and the factors that may affect them.

2.The Consumer Protection (Amendment) Law of 2022.

The Committee began debate on the above bill, the purpose of which is to amend the Consumer Protection Act by deleting Part V thereof, which relates to warranties provided by a seller with respect to contracts for the sale of goods entered into with consumers. The proposed regulation is deemed necessary due to the enactment of the Act on Certain Aspects Concerning Contracts for the Sale of Goods [ACT NO 154(I)/2021].

The Committee decided to proceed to the stage of positioning and making a final decision at its next meeting.

3.The Law on Specifications, Sustainability Criteria and Reduction of Fuel Emissions of 2022.

The Committee began the article-by-article discussion of the above bill, in the presence of government officials and stakeholders. In particular, it examined the provisions of the bill concerning, inter alia, the obligation of fuel suppliers to use renewable sources in the transport sector and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the possibility of imposing an administrative fine in case of violation of the provisions of the bill, the amount of the administrative fines provided for and the possibility of a hierarchical appeal before the Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry.

The purpose of the bill is to adopt new legislation in the context of the harmonization of national legislation with the European Union act entitled "Directive (EU) 2018/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 December 2018 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources", as well as to modernize the existing legislation regulating the quality of fuels.

The Commission decided to continue the discussion on the bill at its next meeting.
