[PIO] Press Release of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture

The Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture met today, Wednesday, 16 March 2022, and discussed the following issues:

1. The University of Cyprus (Disciplinary Control of Academic and Other Teaching Staff) (Amendment) Regulations 2021.

The Committee has commenced the article-by-article consideration of the above Regulations, the purpose of which is to enable the University of Cyprus Disciplinary Control Committee:

a. to impose disciplinary sanctions on a member of the academic or other teaching staff in the event of conviction by a criminal court for specific offences,

b. suspend a member of academic or other teaching staff if an investigation of disciplinary misconduct is ordered against them or upon the opening of a police investigation for the purpose of prosecuting them;

c. impose a financial penalty on a member of academic or other teaching staff if they fail to appear before it or refuse to answer a question.

It is noted that the Regulations, which are intended to fill the gap identified in the legislative framework and recorded in the Audit Office's report for the year 2015, were also considered by the Committee during the previous parliamentary session, but it was not possible to complete their study. Consideration of the Regulations will continue at the next meeting of the Committee.

2.The University of Cyprus (Tuition Fees) (Amendment) Regulations 2021.

The Committee commenced an article-by-article examination of the Regulations, the purpose of which is to establish a framework for the provision of undergraduate programmes of study in a language other than the official languages of the Republic by the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus University of Technology, and to determine the amount of tuition fees to be paid by students for attending these programmes of study.

It is noted that the examination of the Regulations, which were also dealt with by the Committee during the previous parliamentary session, but it was not possible to complete their study, will be continued at the next meeting of the Committee.

3.The University of Cyprus (Student Affairs and Studies) (Amendment) Regulations of 2021.

The Committee began its consideration of the Regulations, the purpose of which is to determine the method of admission of students to undergraduate programmes of study in a language other than the official languages of the Republic to be offered by the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus University of Technology.

It is noted that the examination of the Regulations, which were also dealt with by the Committee during the previous parliamentary term, but it was not possible to complete their study, will be continued at the next meeting of the Committee.
