The Parliamentary Committee for the Monitoring of Public Expenditure Development Plans and Control met today, Thursday, 10 February 2022, in the presence of the Auditor General, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Sports Organisation (CSO) and stakeholders, for the ex officio examination of the issue "The procedures for the construction of the new stadium in Limassol and the possibility of misappropriation of public funds" (No. Doc.: 23.04.039.031-2022) and, in particular, issues related to the increase in the construction costs of the new stadium, the design of the whole project, as well as the reduction of its capacity compared to the original design.
In the context of the discussion, the Auditor General provided information on the reasons for the significant increase in the construction costs of the new stadium, relating to previous mistakes, problems and weaknesses in the original design and the procedures followed on the basis of that design.
The President of the CMO undertook before the Committee that, in cooperation with the Audit Office and the State Aid Control Authority, all the necessary procedures would be followed in order to submit the plan for the management of the stadium in question to the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition in time for it to comply with EU State aid legislation.
The Commission has asked to be kept regularly informed by the CAA on the progress of the matter.
