The Parliamentary Committee to Monitor Public Expenditure Development Plans and Controls met today, Thursday, 3 February 2022, for the ex officio examination of the Annual Report of the Auditor General for the Year 2019 [WASTE MANAGEMENT OF WASTE TIRE VEHICLES SPECIAL REPORT 21.04.2021 (FY/01/2021)] (File No. 23.04.038.070-2021, 05.14.007.001), during which the findings of that report were discussed in relation to the effectiveness of the control procedures implemented by the Department of Environment as the competent authority in the Tyre Waste Management Systems (WMS). In particular, the discussion focused on the activities of the Waste Management Systems, both in terms of quality and quantity, as well as on the problem of uncontrolled disposal of tyres and the need to implement the current legislation at all stages of the tyre life cycle in order to avoid further economic and environmental burden.
In this context, the Committee pointed out that the competent authority should carry out systematic inspections of the WEEE to ensure that the conditions of their licensing and the obligations arising from them are respected and decided to monitor the issue and, if necessary, to make legislative and/or other adjustments, in particular regarding the introduction and incomplete monitoring of tyre management following the privatisation of the commercial part of the Limassol Port.
