"20 years of European Union with better terms and conditions of work"

The completion of 20 years since the Republic of Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU) is an important milestone in the history of our country as a modern European member state, in accordance with European principles and values.

In the two decades that have elapsed since 1 May 2004 until today, Cypriot citizens have benefited significantly from the impact of the European institutional framework on everyday life and particularly on aspects related to work, which is at the heart of life for the vast majority of citizens. The EU has been instrumental in protecting the adequacy of wages, the free movement of workers, the recognition of professional qualifications, work-life balance, transparency in information on working conditions, safety and health in the working environment.

Through EU membership, Cypriot workers benefit, inter alia, as a result of the implementation of European policies, as follows. [*]They are more protected from accidents at work, which have been significantly reduced in accordance with the European Strategy for Safety and Health at Work. [*]They are recognised as qualified professionals in all European countries, in accordance with the Directive on the Mutual Recognition of Professional Qualifications. [*]Supported as new parents and granted leave from work, in accordance with the Directive on work-life balance. [*]Are provided with timely, accurate and detailed information on basic terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with the Directive on Transparent Working Conditions. [*]Low-paid workers are supported through the National Minimum Wage, established in accordance with the Wage Adequacy Directive.

Cyprus' place is in Europe and the Republic of Cyprus as a member of the EU confirms the positive prospects of the European course of its citizens, employees, employers, businesses and organisations. The people-centred government policy, implemented through the implementation of the Governance Programme, is fully aligned with the European policy on the future of work and the results will contribute substantially to the growth of the economy and the cohesion of society for security, stability, progress and prosperity.
