The Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy held a press conference for the presentation of the project "Extension of High Capacity Networks in Underserved Areas" on Tuesday, 16 April 2024.

The project, the implementation of which has been undertaken by Cyta after a relevant tender, aims to develop ultra-high-speed fibre optic networks in areas where there is no investment interest from the market. With €35 million funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan, it contributes to the expansion of fixed broadband networks throughout Cyprus, including rural and remote areas, ensuring equal access to Gigabit connectivity for all citizens without exception.

It is part of a comprehensive government plan aimed at bridging the digital divide and providing citizens with the necessary tools to actively participate in the digital economy and society and to make the most of the digital transition.

To this end, the Ministry of State is investing both in upgrading the country's telecommunications infrastructure and supporting the transition of citizens to high-speed connections, through subsidizing the monthly costs, and in upgrading the digital skills of different population groups, including those living in rural areas.

According to the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Mr Nicodemus Damianou, the Government's ambition is that with the completion of this project of great importance and scope, Cyprus will become the first country to achieve 100% population coverage across the entire spectrum of ultra-high-speed connectivity, mobile and fixed. "We have announced an ambitious plan to substantially upgrade the state's digital infrastructure and the services we enable for citizens, professionals and businesses," the Deputy Minister said, adding that: "For this to be more meaningful, everyone should be able to use them equally. And this is perhaps the most important thing that this investment offers". He then thanked Cyta for its contribution to the building of an integrated digital ecosystem in the country, describing it as a highly reliable and valuable partner in every government effort.

For his part, Cyta CEO Andreas Neocleous thanked the Deputy Ministry, noting: "Cyta is the only provider that undertakes the construction of the network in remote residential areas and villages, so that we as Cyprus can achieve 100% coverage of the population. This is because we understand the responsibility of our role. We respond to the challenges of tomorrow with projects today, constantly releasing possibilities and options that improve everyday life and open up new opportunities for everyone, whoever they are, wherever they are, without discrimination. We stand by the State and seek new firsts for our country."
