The Ministry of Health organised today, Thursday 17 February, a press conference on: "National Strategy for Thalassaemia and Other Haemoglobinopathies", in the multi-purpose hall of the Ministry of Finance.

The press conference was held on the occasion of the approval of the National Strategy for Thalassaemia and Other Haemoglobinopathies by the Council of Ministers at their meeting on 2 February 2022, which will have the character of an advisory body to the Minister of Health and, among other things, will consult with him to determine the actions for its implementation.

In his address, the Minister of Health, Mr. Michael Hadjipandela, described the National Strategy for Thalassaemia and other haemoglobinopathies in Cyprus as a reference point. He described the National Strategy as a key tool for the Ministry of Health to provide a clearly better framework for the operation of haemoglobinopathies, with the benefit of the citizens as the main focus. Hatzipandela reiterated his personal support as well as the commitment of the Ministry of Health to adopt the Strategy, which aims to update the Thalassaemia Programme as well as to ensure the quality of life of patients through a holistic approach to their needs.

This was followed by a welcome address by the Chairman of the National Thalassaemia Committee, Mr. Panos Englisho, who said that the recent decision of the Council of Ministers to adopt and implement a long-term, holistic strategy for the management of Thalassaemia on a thorough and integrated basis, represents another great achievement in the long journey of the last fifty years as a country in terms of successful management of the disease. He added that Cyprus holds the sceptre in the global fight for the prevention, control and management of Thalassaemia, passing on its example and good practices through the International Thalassaemia Federation and other channels and networking for both health professionals and patients.

The main concern and utmost responsibility of all those involved in the National Committee, he stressed, is to monitor very closely the implementation of each of the actions foreseen in the Strategy, based on a roadmap with clear timelines, and with the same credibility and commitment demonstrated during its writing.

Then, Mr. Miltos Miliades, President of the Pancyprian Antianemic Association, in his address, said that the approval of the "National Strategy for Thalassaemia and other Haemoglobinopathies" by the Council of Ministers is perhaps the most important development in recent years in relation to the treatment of Thalassaemia.

With the implementation of the Strategy in terms of the adoption of guidelines, protocols and procedures, access to medicines and quality consumables, the forthcoming start of work on the New Thalassaemia Centre in Nicosia by the OCYPY and the adoption of a complete social care framework, as included in the National Strategy, along with dozens of other actions and plans, a much better future for the family of people with Thalassaemia in Cyprus is expected, Mr.

In conclusion, the Executive Director of the International Thalassaemia Federation, Dr. Androulla Eleftheriou, presented the development of the National Strategy.
