The National eHealth Authority (EAHY) presented its budget today before the Health Committee of the Parliament. The budget was prepared on the basis of the strategic plan of EAHY for the period 2024 - 2026, which defines the framework of EAHY's actions and initiatives. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAHY, Professor Christos N. Schizas, noted that the organization's budget for the year 2024 aims to implement the Authority's actions and is based on the creation and safeguarding of the eHealth sector in Cyprus. It was stressed that real savings in health expenditure will come after the full implementation of eHealth in Cyprus, that unnecessary examinations and unnecessary administration of drugs and treatments will be reduced and that there is an investment in health to avoid illness through early diagnosis and prevention.
Schizas said that after four years since the Authority was established, as of 1 March 2024, 10 officials will take office to fill key positions, but there is still a need to fill other organic positions until the National e-Health Authority is fully staffed.
In addition, the Health Committee was informed about the ongoing actions for the implementation of the Single Electronic Health Record, highlighting the important role that Cyprus has to play, as it is the first time that our country is coordinating the work of the joint action on health issues of the Member States of the European Union (EU) and in which the competent authorities for e-Health and other related organisations from all EU Member States are taking part.
In conclusion, it was pointed out to the Health Committee that the Authority is an organisation that attracts external competitive funding from Europe to carry out its work, and in particular for 2024, for every one euro of government funding the Authority earns four euros of external funding.
