The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr Athena Michaelidou, participated today in a breakfast at the 3rd Technical and Vocational School Makarios III in Nicosia, as part of the celebrations for the Month of Francophonie. The event was also attended by the Ambassador of France to Cyprus, Mrs. Salina Grenet-Catalano, the Director of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training, Dr. Elias Markatzis, and other officials as well as parents of the students.
In her brief address, the Minister referred to Cyprus' long-standing support for the principles of democracy, freedom, linguistic and cultural diversity, coexistence, respect, equality and solidarity, which the International Organisation of Francophonie stands for. At the same time, Dr Michaelidou stressed that the Ministry's priority is the transition to inclusive education, the provision of quality education for all and the transmission to the new generations of the necessary skills to face the challenges of the modern world. Addressing the Ambassador of France, she thanked her for the very good cooperation and assured her of the Ministry's intention to further strengthen it.
In her address, the Ambassador of France thanked the Minister and the Headmaster of the school for the invitation and hospitality and congratulated the children and teachers for organizing the event. Addressing the Minister, she thanked the Republic of Cyprus for the very good and close cooperation in recent years on education issues and the implementation of policies to promote the teaching of French and its certification in public schools, noting that it is a language that opens up more avenues of access to the academic and professional world.
