The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs.Anita Demetriou, held today, Wednesday, 22 November 2023, a press conference for the presentation of the Report of the Second Session of the Twelfth Parliamentary Term. In addition to parliamentary editors and representatives of the print and electronic media, the presentation was attended by MPs and representatives of parliamentary parties.

The President of the House referred to the work developed by the Parliament during the session under review, which concerns both legislative power and parliamentary control, as well as the broad participation of representatives of the House of Representatives in European and international meetings, and increased activity at the level of parliamentary diplomacy. In addition, 7 Resolutions and a Declaration were tabled and passed in plenary.

Particular mention was made of the 18th revision of the Constitution, which concerns Family Law, the adoption of Regulations on the Establishment and Operation of the Independent Authority against Corruption and Transparency in Public Decision-Making Processes with the aim of combating corruption, the adoption of the Bill on the imposition of reduced Value Added Tax for the purchase and construction of housing, as well as the fulfilment of the obligations of the Republic of Cyprus towards the European Union within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Ms Demetriou referred to the publishing and research activity developed, the conferences, the various events held and the initiatives taken, both on internal planning issues and on the further upgrading of the BTA at as many levels as possible. During this session, 2951 visitors had the opportunity to tour the Parliament's premises and learn about the procedures and responsibilities of the Parliament. More broadly, Demetriou said, among other things, the purpose of the parliament is to make it accessible to citizens and to put into practice the philosophy of constant contact with civil society.

Finally, Ms Demetriou referred to the objectives and milestones of the next period, the commitment of the House of Representatives to the reunification and liberation of Cyprus, but also to the urgent need to protect the institutions and democracy. ''We have an obligation through the institutions themselves to secure rights, to secure a perspective. In the face of a climate of toxicity and cannibalism that does not even respond in most cases to the real needs of citizens. But it breeds misinformation and populism. And herein lies our responsibility to respond with more democracy as our only choice and direction," he concluded.

The two volumes of the report are available in electronic form on the official website of the House of Representatives.
