It is an honour to be with you today to discuss the important issue of fighting cancer in Cyprus, in the framework of the "European Cancer Plan". An initiative developed by the European Commission to improve the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of cancer in the Member States, including our country. Around 4000 new cases of cancer are detected every year in our country. The figures, as already analysed, are very alarming. The numbers sound the alarm about the need for immediate coordinated efforts and decisive action...

The European Plan highlights important initiatives that have already been put in place by the Ministry of Health of Cyprus. The upgrading of the network of mammography centres by extending their operation to all provinces of Cyprus, the promotion of the implementation of population-based programmes such as Colorectal, Prostate and Cervical Cancer, the promotion of legislation on Palliative Care, and the inclusion of Institutional Palliative Care services in the GESY, are some of the actions underway by the Ministry of Health.

An important project, which is being promoted for implementation, is the development of the National Cancer Institute, which stems from the National Cancer Strategy but is also a long-standing aspiration of all stakeholders in the field of oncology. The Institute will be the scientific body of expertise in cancer issues, with a mandate to organise and coordinate all activities related to cancer management in Cyprus, focusing on the main pillars of the National Strategy concerning Prevention, Early Diagnosis, Supportive Care and Rehabilitation, Case Recording through the maintenance of the Cancer Registry and Research.

The Ministry of Health on the recommendation of the National Cancer Commission and studying successful examples of the establishment and operation of National Cancer Institutes in other countries, such as France and Luxembourg, proceeded to prepare a thorough techno-economic study. The study is currently before the competent Ministries of Health and Finance for evaluation and a final decision on how to implement it in a way that will allow it to carry out its responsibilities without any hindrance and make a substantial contribution to cancer treatment.

The Institute will be the scientific body of expertise in cancer issues, with a mandate to organize and coordinate all activities related to cancer treatment in Cyprus, focusing on the main pillars of the National Cancer Institute.

Through the operation of the National Cancer Institute, it will be possible to provide holistic care to cancer patients and their families, as there will be better coordination of the services provided, covering the whole spectrum of oncology. Finally, it will be part of the effort for specialized research and promotion of top quality therapeutic practices

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is obvious that Cyprus is not only adopting the "European Cancer Plan" but also proceeding with the implementation of concrete steps to tackle cancer. As the Ministry of Health and the Government, we continue to promote these initiatives in order to improve the health and quality of life of our citizens. Stella Kyriakidou, for her presence today.

Finally, thank you all for your participation looking forward to fruitful discussions.
