The Minister of Justice and Public Order Ms Anna Koukkidi Prokopiou attended the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council, which took place in Luxembourg on 19 and 20 October 2023.
During the first day of the Council, the situation in Israel and the Middle East and its implications for the wider region and for all EU Member States were discussed on an ad hoc basis. In her intervention, the Minister of Justice referred to the increased security measures taken by the Republic of Cyprus, but also to the activation of the ESTIA Plan, offering facilities for the repatriation of European and third country nationals from Israel via Cyprus, while ensuring their safety while they are in our country.
The "27" also discussed Schengen issues, endorsing EU decisions on transnational cooperation in the fight against cross-border crime, in particular crime and organised crime, including drug trafficking. Particular attention was paid to the smuggling of persons, which is on the rise due to migratory flows. A Progress Report on the Regulation on preventing and combating sexual abuse of children was also presented, as well as the prevention of the radicalisation of minors on the internet.
Justice issues were discussed on 20 October, where Ministers adopted Council Conclusions on digital empowerment and fundamental rights of citizens. They also had the opportunity, during a working lunch, to discuss Rule of Law issues related to the efficiency and quality of the judicial system of the Member States.
