Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou is leaving for Geneva today, where he will participate in the 2nd International Forum on Refugees 2023. The Forum takes place every four years and aims to promote the objectives of the International Compact on Refugees, which was ratified by the UN General Assembly in 2019 and aims to implement a comprehensive model for dealing with refugees.

During the Forum, participants will have the opportunity to exchange positions and best practices for a better response of states to the refugee crisis. In addition, ways to enhance States' capacity to respond to the refugee issue will be explored, with a focus on actions to alleviate pressures on countries receiving large numbers of refugees, supporting the creation of safe conditions in countries of origin to enhance returns, expanding refugees' access to third country solutions (resettlement and/or other pathways) and enhancing opportunities for refugees to become self-reliant.

In his intervention, Mr Ioannou will convey to the participants the current situation in Cyprus in relation to migration and the pressures that our country, as one of the European frontline Member States, is facing due to increased migrant/refugee flows. The Cypriot Minister will also refer to the international dimension of the refugee issue and will underline the need to find targeted solutions through the strengthening of close cooperation between states and other stakeholders.

The Interior Minister returns to Cyprus on Friday, 15 December.
