[PIO] Participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels

Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos participated in the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union (EU), which took place today in Brussels. The Council discussed, inter alia, the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East.

During the discussion on Ukraine, the Foreign Minister expressed Cyprus' solidarity with Ukraine. He condemned the Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine resulting in the loss of civilian lives and called for full respect of International Humanitarian Law.

In this context, he said that Cyprus, itself a victim of illegal invasion and continued occupation of territory that is European territory, supports the provision of assistance to Ukraine. He referred to the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, noting that July 20 is a tragic day for Cyprus. He added that Turkey's ongoing policy of consolidating the fait accompli of invasion and continued occupation is reprehensible.

The Foreign Minister also briefed his counterparts on Turkey's efforts during the recent Informal Summit of the Organization of Turkic Speaking States to promote secessionist entity in violation of international legality.

With regard to the situation in the Middle East, Mr. Kobos reiterated Cyprus' call for an immediate ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. He underlined the need to avoid further escalation and destabilisation in the region. Regarding the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, Mr. Kobos underlined the need to ensure the rapid, safe and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza. To this end, he said, Cyprus is working closely with direct stakeholders and partners, contributing to the next steps for the delivery of humanitarian aid through the Cyprus Sea Corridor and additionally through land routes.

In the margins of the Council, the Minister had a bilateral meeting with his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp.
