Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos participated in the proceedings of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which took place today, Monday 13 November 2023 in Brussels.

The Council discussed the current situation in the Middle East following the Hamas terrorist attack in Israel, the latest developments in relation to Armenia and Azerbaijan and the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Mr. Kobos, after again condemning the Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel, focused on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, presenting Cyprus' proposal for the creation of a maritime corridor for the unimpeded and safe delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The initiative, as presented by the President of the Republic at the International Humanitarian Conference in Paris, he noted, carries a concrete implementation plan with immediate, medium and long-term solutions, as well as technical arrangements. The fact that Cyprus is the closest European state in the region with long-standing excellent relations with the states of the region serves to strengthen the implementation of the proposal, he concluded.

In his intervention during the debate on the situation in relation to Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Foreign Minister, after welcoming the proposed EU support measures for Armenia to address the current political, economic and humanitarian situation, noted the need to take additional measures to act as a deterrent. The EU should closely monitor the situation, he noted, adding that efforts for sustainable peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan should be based on the principles of recognition of sovereignty, inviolability of borders and territorial integrity. In conclusion, he stressed that Cyprus supports Armenia's efforts to protect its cultural heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh and called on the EU to take the necessary measures including this aspect.

Regarding Ukraine, Mr.Kombos reiterated Cyprus' support for Ukraine and stressed the need, in view of the winter, for the swift adoption of the 8th support package for the country. He also reiterated the importance of effectively addressing the circumvention of sanctions, while regarding the Peace Formula, he stressed that Cyprus will actively contribute to its implementation.
