[PIO] Participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs at the 27th EU-Muscat Gulf Cooperation Council Joint Ministerial Council

Foreign Minister Dr Konstantinos Kombos participated in the 27th Joint Ministerial Council of the European Union - Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), held in Muscat, on 9 and 10 October 2023.

The discussions focused on further strengthening cooperation and strategically deepening relations between the two institutions. In the light of recent developments in the region, a discussion was held on issues related to regional and international security. During the meeting, issues such as humanitarian aid, climate change and the green transition were also discussed in view of COP28, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates next November.

The Foreign Minister referred, inter alia, to Cyprus' support for further deepening relations between the EU and the GCC, stressing that more effective and closer coordination would be to the benefit of both organisations. He also referred to Cyprus' role as a regional pillar of stability and security. Luigi di Maio, with whom he exchanged views on the further strengthening of the EU's cooperation with the Gulf countries, as well as on the latest developments in the region.

The Foreign Minister also held a series of bilateral meetings with officials of the region, during which he discussed issues of common interest, both at bilateral and regional level. In particular, Mr. Kombos met with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, Minister of the Royal Office of Oman General Sultan Al Nu' amani, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Mr. Sheikh Salem Abdullah Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bahrain Mr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.
