The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Mrs Athina Michaelidou, participated today in the seminar for Directors of Secondary General and Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training Schools, which took place in the auditorium of the Lyceum of Archbishop Makarios III.

During the seminar, the Minister presented the priorities and objectives that have been set for the new school year.

I think it is very important to have this communication with our principals who are the leaders of the school unit, who are the people who will implement our policies and who live the daily life of the school.

We informed them about the changes that will be implemented in the new school year that starts in a few days, we informed them about our policies, and about the measures that we have taken to mitigate any problems. We heard from them - and this is very important - their suggestions and feedback on our policies, which were very positive.

Because of the preparation that has been done, I am optimistic that the year starts without any particular problems and if and when they arise we are ready to deal with them. We discussed the issues of violence and delinquency, the issues of staffing. We placed particular emphasis on the prevention of issues related to the attendance of students and we analysed the rationale behind our immediate transition, in a targeted and planned manner, to the modern school, to the more student-centred school, where we can cultivate the abilities and skills in children to be active citizens," the Education Minister said.

Ms. Michaelidou then responded to questions from reporters.

In response to a question regarding air conditioning and concerns expressed about high school diplomas for children with immigrant biographies, the Education Minister noted: "For air conditioners we have already announced that measures are being taken to start installing them on the basis of specific criteria and safety conditions set.

For children with an immigrant biography, we have explained and discussed with our principals our policy, which is being improved for this year with an increase in the number of hours of teaching Greek as a second language and with the assessment of these children in Greek language skills."

Asked about what secondary school teachers will face when they return to schools, Ms. Michaelidou noted: "They already have the curriculum for the year. They will also have in their hands, within days, what is assessed and how by subject. They also already have the Ministry's emphases in their hands and this is very important. So they have their working framework by now and they also have their syllabus, which is clear, so that we can have the best possible results this year."
