The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athina Michaelidou, participated yesterday, Thursday, 30 November 2023, in the 6th European Conference on Education entitled "The European Education Area, a reality for all". The Conference, which took place in Brussels, was open to the public and was attended by education policy makers, teachers, academics, researchers, etc.

Several Ministers of the EU Member States, responsible for education, youth and sport, as well as representatives of educational organisations and European institutions, participated in parallel working groups and discussed the strengthening of active citizenship through education, the future role of Artificial Intelligence in education, and the future role of the European Union. The same panel included the Croatian Minister of State for Science and Education, Ms Iva Ivanković, the President of Eurochild and former President of Malta, Ms Marie Louise Coleira, Mr Dragoş Pîslaru, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs, and Ms Dragoş Pîslaru, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs. Arianna Lazzari, Associate Professor at the University of Bologna.

The Minister was invited to speak on the issue of the shortage of teachers in the pre-school education sector and to share with her interlocutors and the audience ways in which Cyprus manages to be one of the few countries that do not face this problem. Ms Michaelidou presented the factors that contribute to the attraction of appropriately qualified staff in Early Childhood Education and Care. She referred, inter alia, to attractive employment conditions, continuous in-service training, opportunities for promotion and career development and a high quality school environment. The discussion provided an opportunity for Cyprus to be recognised as an example of good practice in personnel issues and maintaining a positive climate in pre-school education.

On the sidelines of her participation in the Conference, Ms Michaelidou met with the President of the International School Sport Federation (ISF), with whom she discussed issues of common interest and prospects for strengthening cooperation within the organisation.

She also met today with the Director General of the European Commission's Directorate General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM), Mr Mario Nava, with whom she discussed current and future cooperation.
