The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athina Michailidou, participated on 29 February - 1 March 2024 in the Informal Meeting of Education Ministers held in Brussels, under the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

During the first day of the proceedings, the Minister of Education attended a panel discussion of five of her counterparts, who presented the framework of student mobility in their country. She then had the opportunity to participate in an open discussion, highlighting the need to take into account the different approaches of Member States to mobility and the respective challenges they face, as well as the need to exchange good practices in order to facilitate mobility and avoid the creation of additional obstacles in this process.

On the second day of the Summit, Ms Michaelidou participated in a round table discussion with her counterparts. The Minister of Education spoke about the high rate of degree mobility, referring to the long-standing culture that has been formed in Cyprus for studying abroad and underlining the benefits that both students and our society at large gain. He also referred to the relatively low percentage of students studying in Cyprus who undertake short term mobility and pointed out the reasons why this may be the case, highlighting mainly the difficulties of access to other European countries and the high cost of accommodation and living in these countries. At the same time, she shared with her counterparts, good practices that Cyprus is implementing, such as the strengthening of multilingualism in Secondary General Education, but also the development of policies aimed at increasing short term mobility. Finally, she referred to the efforts to be made at European level, stressing again the need to highlight the different approaches and priorities of Member States in order to encourage a more accessible and sustainable mobility.

In the margins of her visit to Brussels, Ms Michaelidou signed yesterday with her Austrian counterpart, Mr Martin Polaschek, a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Education.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is part of the efforts of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth for the internationalisation of our country's education, while at the same time serving the objective of deepening bilateral relations with Austria and strengthening bilateral dialogue both within the European Union and in the framework of international organisations.

In particular, the Memorandum seeks to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in areas such as (1) Higher Education, (2) Technical and Vocational Education and Training, (3) Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development, (4) Adult Education and Lifelong Learning, (5) Digital Education, (6) Teacher Training, (7) Exchanges between students, teachers and experts, (8) Exchange of information and good practices concerning the educational systems of both countries, teaching materials, curricula and educational reforms.
