The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Mr Prodromos Prodromou participated today in a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture, which is holding an article-by-article discussion of the bill for the establishment of a Deputy Ministry of Culture.
After the session, the Minister made statements to journalists.
Specifically, Mr Prodromou said: "I participated today in the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Culture on the occasion of the article-by-article discussion of the bill for the creation of the Deputy Ministry of Culture.
I want to thank the President and the members of the Committee because the process of article-by-article discussion has begun and I hope that the bill will be completed and approved, because we really have before us a historic opportunity to take an important step forward for culture.
It is imperative, given the very great cultural heritage of our country, the depth that we have within our history, but also the uninterrupted remarkable artistic creation, that we give new perspectives to the management of culture, both heritage and current creation, by the State.
In the past few days I had meetings with the organized bodies from the field of cultural creation and informed them not only about the progress of the bill for the Deputy Ministry of Culture, but also about the initiative that is underway to propose legislation that will guarantee the professional status of artists and workers in the field of culture. This is also a great need and it is a legislation which, if adopted, will allow for a more effective and more targeted policy to support people in culture and the arts.
I convey the support of the various bodies representing the arts and creation to the Ministry of State for Culture. I would like to underline that various concerns and complaints that have been heard during the discussions of the Parliamentary Committee on the Deputy Ministry of Culture are fortunately not valid. The Deputy Ministry will be a Deputy Ministry under the Presidency, as are the other Deputy Ministries that we have. Therefore, the powers relating to antiquities and archaeological monuments will come directly under the President of the Republic, through the Deputy Minister that he will appoint, that is, it will be in the central state; there is no doubt about that and there is no reason to be concerned about it.
I look forward to the approval of the bill by the Parliament, so that we can take the next steps and take care of more and especially culture."
