[PIO] Participation of the House of Representatives in the Spring Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

The members of the Cypriot delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Mr. Nicos Tornaritis (Head), George Loucaides and Kostis Efstathiou, will travel to Strasbourg the day after tomorrow, Sunday 23 June 2024, to participate in the work of the 3rd part of the 2024 session of the CSCE, between 24 and 28 June 2024. The delegation will be accompanied by the Senior International Relations Officer Ms. Gabriela Maragou and the International Relations Officer A of the Parliament Ms. Elena Persiani.

Among the topics of great interest during this session, will be the Report and Resolution of the Italian MP, Mr. Piero Fassino on: "Call for the return of Famagusta to its rightful inhabitants" which is expected to be discussed and adopted on Thursday, 27 June 2024.

Mr. Loucaides will also present a relevant Opinion on behalf of the Committee on Political Affairs and Democracy to the plenary of the House on the issue of reconciliation and compensation procedures as effective ways of dealing with conflicts and building a common and peaceful future.

Other issues to be addressed at the session include, inter alia, strengthening democracy through participatory processes and the prospect of further involving youth in the work of the Convention, the protection of women human rights defenders in Europe, ensuring the protection of human rights when examining asylum applications, Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine and the destruction of cultural identity in wartime and in peace.

The Assembly will be addressed by the President of Ukraine, Mr Volodymyr Zelensky, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr Volker Türk, and the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Ms Marija Pejčinović Burić.

Finally, the Vigdis Prize for the Empowerment of Women will be awarded for the first time and a special ceremony will be held in the semi-circle of the Assembly to welcome the Olympic flame.
