Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos participated in the extraordinary web-based meeting of the European Union (EU) Foreign Affairs Council on the situation in the Middle East, which took place late yesterday afternoon.

In his intervention during the discussion, Mr. Combos referred to the situation in the Middle East following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, reiterating that the release of all hostages is key. At the same time, the Foreign Minister referred to the need for humanitarian assistance to civilians in the Gaza Strip, adding that it is the collective responsibility of the "27" to translate their deep concern into concrete actions by finding effective solutions.

In this context, the Foreign Minister referred to his recent contacts with his counterparts in the region, focusing on the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to establish a maritime humanitarian corridor to Gaza. He underlined that this initiative is based on addressing the security parameters of the key stakeholders in all its phases, noting that this is precisely why the initiative has received a positive response from Israel and we are in a position to proceed with the technical elaboration of its parameters. In conclusion, the Foreign Minister reiterated that this is a complementary initiative that does not compete with others and that it is open to all partners who wish to participate in it.
