Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos participated in the proceedings of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union (EU), which took place today in Brussels. The Council discussed, inter alia, the situation in the Middle East, the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine, the latest developments in the Sahel, as well as other issues in the international news.
In the context of the discussion on the situation in the Middle East, Mr Kombos referred again to the extremely worrying humanitarian situation in Gaza, stressing the need to protect all civilians. At the same time, he reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. He then noted that it is imperative to prevent further escalation and possible contagion of the crisis in the region, stressing that only the prospect of reviving the Middle East Peace Process can pave the way for lasting peace and stability in the region. Cyprus is ready to contribute with all the means at its disposal, both for sending humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Gaza and for the prospect of reviving the Peace Process.
With regard to Ukraine, the Foreign Minister reiterated Cyprus' firm support for the people and the Government of Ukraine. He expressed Cyprus' readiness to support the 13th package of sanctions, noting that circumvention remains the key factor undermining our joint efforts. In conclusion, he reiterated that the best guarantee for Ukraine's security and resilience is its European course.
During the discussion on the latest developments in the Sahel, Cyprus highlighted the importance of adjusting the EU's strategic orientation in the region, focusing on support to the societies of the region, but also on the challenges faced by the states of the region, including, inter alia, addressing both the terrorist threat and the instrumentalization of migrants, which are now becoming more and more widespread in the region.
