The Informal Energy Council of the European Union (EU) took place between 15 and 16 April in Brussels.Cyprus was represented by the Director General of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr Marios Panagidis.

During the Council, issues concerning the development of electricity networks were discussed, with the participation of the European Economic Area countries (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), representatives of the International Energy Agency (IEA), the European Development Bank, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSOe), the European Committee for Standardisation (CENELEC) and the Renewable Grid Initiative.

It is noted that the Council was informed by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Mr. German Galushchenko, on the state of the energy system and infrastructure in his country.

He stressed the importance of proper protection of networks, as well as other critical infrastructure, by using all modern technologies. He stressed the critical importance of funding instruments with the contribution of the national competent authorities. Finally, it expressed support for the role of standardisation in accelerating infrastructure development, as well as efficiency and interoperability between Member States' energy systems.
