The Informal Council of Ministers for Consumer Protection of the European Union (EU) was held in Brussels.Cyprus was represented by the Director General (DG) of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr.
The discussion focused on the correct application of the rules governing the internal market, as well as on digital transition issues, mainly regarding artificial intelligence, e-commerce, but also on influencers who use social networks for promotional activities, and how this will affect consumers and businesses.
In his intervention, the DG referred to the importance of an efficient and fair internal market that promotes economic prosperity, sustainable and technological development for the benefit of both businesses and consumers.
To achieve this goal, he said, there must be a synergy and close cooperation between all stakeholders and it is imperative that the EU Regulation promoting Consumer Protection Cooperation is amended to address the growing needs of consumers and ensure that they are protected against these challenges. In addition, he referred to the need for digital education in financial matters, especially for vulnerable population groups.
Regarding the digital transition, Panagides referred to the challenges that consumers will face with the implementation of artificial intelligence technology and the need to ensure consumer safety.
Furthermore, he made special reference to influencers and noted that it is necessary to educate influencers so that they are in compliance with consumer law, especially on the issue of consumer protection from unfair commercial practices. Finally, he referred in particular to the actions that the competent department of Cyprus is already taking in this direction.
