The Director General of the Directorate General of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr.Andreas A. Gregoriou, participated, on 20 January, in the International Conference of Ministers of Agriculture, which was held in the framework of the 16th World Food and Agriculture Forum in Berlin.
The 16th World Food and Agriculture Forum is organised annually by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture as part of the "Green Week" in Berlin. This year's forum focused on food sufficiency through the intensification of the international dialogue on agricultural policy, underlining the need to implement sustainable development goals, with the main objective of zero hunger by 2030.
This year's forum, through the participation of the Ministers of Agriculture, was based on four pillars: Promoting sustainable production and food self-sufficiency, strengthening resilient and sustainable food production chains, reducing food loss and waste from food and, finally, empowering vulnerable groups in terms of food security, access to food and the jobs created in the agri-food chain.
In his intervention, the Director-General of the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development said that it is very important to take measures and innovative initiatives to support the He added that in Cyprus measures have been adopted and are being taken to reduce food waste through the National Action Plan for the Circular Economy and the Waste Prevention Programme.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment adopts and implements policies aimed at reducing food waste, ensuring food sufficiency and developing and implementing sustainable methods in food production. Through dialogue and strengthening stakeholder relations, sustainable food production systems and the protection of the environment and people are supported.
